10 years of Computer Kids
Computer Kids began over 10 years ago with
the inception and development of after school classes for children
teaching touch-typing. As a competent touch-typist, Cheryl
Hill was constantly amazed by the difficulty many primary
aged children had in completing computer work due to poor keyboard
skills. Recognising this need she created an after school typing
group for students at her children's school.
This was an instant success with several classes running each week
within the first six months and workshop groups running during the
school holidays.
During years of continuous improvement, this touch typing program
has evolved into a comprehensive 5-level course specifically
targeted at primary-aged children. Each level consists of a teaching
component, reinforcement games and motivational activities.
Continuous assessment throughout the course grades student progress
in words per minute and skill.
Cheryl also observed that, ten years ago, there was only minimal
integration of computer technology in classroom lessons.
She expanded the
touch typing classes to include lessons
in core computer skills, word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia &
presentations and internet usage. The programme
has now grown to include technologies such as movie-making, web design and digital animation.
Computer Kids After school classes have
been held in three Sydney venues
and have run continuously for more than 10
years, with five classes per week currently in session
(2008). They are always fully subscribed.

In 2004 Cheryl was contracted by Lindfield East
Public School in Sydney as specialist Technology Teacher,
a role that continues to date. This team-teaching role involves
developing, writing and teaching computer skills to the whole K-6 school.
Recognising the need for greater technology integration in the
classroom, Cheryl devised a progressive skills-based computer
lessons programme that fits the NSW primary curriculum and adheres
to an appropriate Information, Communication, Technology skills continuum. Challenging and interesting
subject material intrigues students and provides highly engaging
lessons covering many parts of the syllabus.

Inadequate infrastructure, insufficient hardware and limited training and development opportunities
resulted in a slow uptake of technology by many classroom teachers.
Cheryl has spent many years working with teachers to increase confidence
when working with computer technology and devising lesson plans.
Cheryl believes that there is still much work to be done to fully
integrate technology into the curriculum and she passionately believes that
strong ICT knowledge is a basic skill required by all students prior
to entering secondary school and preparing for life in 21st century.
Research shows it is certain that computers and ICT will feature
strongly in all occupations this Digital Generation will ultimately
embrace.
